Assisted Self‑publishing Programme

Supporting new authors writing in previously under-published South African languages.

How the programme works

We select up to 12 manuscripts annually. Successful applicants receive language editing, technical support to prepare ebooks, and access to promotional channels.

A clear, step-by-step process designed for first-time authors. We guide you from manuscript submission through to published ebook.

Submit your manuscript

Send a final, original manuscript in one of the eligible languages between 1–14 March.

Language editing

Work with a language specialist to polish grammar, style and readability.

Formatting & cover

We help prepare a professional ebook file and a market-ready cover.

Distribution & promotion

Your ebook is distributed and promoted across digital retailers.

Submission guidelines

Submissions are open every year from 1–14 March. We accept original, final manuscripts in eligible languages.

Selection

Up to 12 manuscripts are selected annually. Selected authors will be announced on World Book Day (13 April).

What we provide

  • Language editing and mentoring
  • Formatting and cover support for ebooks
  • Support with distribution and promotion

Important note

The Assisted Self-publishing Programme does not include the printing, warehousing, distributing, marketing or selling of printed books. This is a self-publishing initiative that enables writers to create ebooks. WritePublishRead is an assistive tool which will prepare authors to be as successful as possible as independent, self-published authors. It is not a publishing agreement. Authors selected for the Assisted Self-publishing Programme will retain all copyright, and will not enter into a publishing agreement with Via Afrika, the NRF Chair in African Languages, or ALASA, as a consequence of being selected for the Assisted Self-publishing Programme.

Who is this for?

South African writers (based in South Africa) who have not been previously published, writing in under‑published South African languages.
